Welcome to Barcelona

Barcelona's story begins in Neolithic times, but it was the Romans who gave the city its first shape — founding a walled colony called Barcino at the end of the first century BC. Those ancient walls still stand in the old town today. Over the centuries that followed, the city passed through Muslim rule, Christian reconquest, and medieval glory as the political and economic capital of the Western Mediterranean. The Gothic Quarter — its lanes, palaces and cathedral — is the living record of that golden age.

The 19th century transformed Barcelona again. A period of industrial revival and cultural renaissance known as the Renaixença saw the Catalan language restored as a literary force and the city reimagined from the ground up. The result was the Eixample — that perfectly gridded district of wide boulevards and chamfered corners that surrounds you now — and the flowering of Modernisme: the Catalan Art Nouveau movement that gave the world Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner, and a skyline unlike any other on earth.

The 20th century brought turbulence — Civil War, dictatorship, and suppression — before democracy returned in 1978 and Barcelona reclaimed itself. The 1992 Olympic Games recast the waterfront and announced the city's return to the world stage. Today it stands as one of Europe's great cultural capitals: bold, proud, and gloriously itself. For September, you'll find it at its finest — the summer crowds thinned, the light turning golden in the late afternoon, and the temperature hovering around 26°C, made for long evenings outdoors.

The Eleven you must see

01
La Sagrada Família
Gaudí's Unfinished Masterpiece
Under construction since 1882 and still breathtaking. The interplay of light through the stained glass nave is unlike anything else in the world. Book tickets well in advance — it sells out weeks ahead.
02
Park Güell
Hilltop Mosaic Gardens
Gaudí's fairy-tale park offers the finest panoramic views over the city. The dragon staircase and tiled terrace are iconic. Go in the morning for golden light and a calmer experience.
03
Casa Batlló
Passeig de Gràcia
Right on your doorstep — Gaudí's most flamboyant building, its dragon-spine roof and bone-white facade unmistakable from the street. The evening magic tours are spectacular and worth every euro.
04
Casa Milà · La Pedrera
The Stone Quarry
Gaudí's undulating stone apartment building two blocks from Casa Batlló. The warrior-helmet chimneys on the rooftop are extraordinary. The building is still occupied — a private home for over a century.
05
El Born & Gothic Quarter
Medieval Heart of the City
Wander without a map through lanes laid down two thousand years ago. Roman walls, the Cathedral, El Mercat de Santa Caterina and the city's finest pintxos bars — all within a few enchanting streets of each other.
06
Barceloneta & the Waterfront
Sea, Sand & Seafood
September is the perfect beach month — warm but no longer crowded. Barceloneta is the most famous strip, but Bogatell and Mar Bella to the north are calmer and beloved by locals. The promenade stretches 4.5km.
07
Palau de la Música Catalana
UNESCO Concert Hall
Domènech i Montaner's Art Nouveau masterpiece — stained glass, floral sculptures, and a central skylight that floods the hall with coloured light. If there's a concert on during your visit, go. Tour it regardless.
08
Montjuïc
The Castle Hill
A hilltop fortress with sweeping views across the harbour and the city. Home to world-class museums, the Olympic stadium, and the Font Màgica fountain — illuminated on weekend evenings in a free light show.
09
La Boqueria Market
Las Ramblas
The most famous market in Spain — a riot of colour, jamón, fresh fruit and seafood. Go before 11am to see it at its best and avoid the tour groups. Don't leave without a glass of fresh juice from one of the stalls.
10
Casa Vicens
Gaudí's First Masterpiece
Built between 1883 and 1885 in the Gràcia neighbourhood, Casa Vicens was Gaudí's first major commission and the work that launched his extraordinary career. The vivid tiles, Moorish arches and exuberant colour make it unlike anything else in the city. Far quieter than Casa Batlló and profoundly undervisited — a real find.
11
El Poblenou & 22@ District
Barcelona's Creative Quarter
The old industrial district reborn as a neighbourhood of studios, concept restaurants and independent shops. Rambla del Poblenou on a Sunday morning — locals reading papers, children playing — is Barcelona at its most genuinely itself.

Aishetu @ 50

It's my intention for this weekend to be a celebration of my truly blessed life. I am eternally grateful for every joy and every setback that has led me to this marvelous moment. I am particularly thankful for the wonderful friends and family who have been my biggest cheerleaders — I could not imagine celebrating this with anyone else.

The goal is simple: eat, play, laugh, dance, drink, and pray. I'm even more excited to welcome you to the city I now call home. As you will see, Barcelona is the most enchanting place on earth, and I feel doubly fortunate to be able to live here.

The weekend moves between the city and the coast, from an intimate welcome dinner to a main celebration, with afternoons to explore, rest, and simply enjoy one another's company.

More details on each event will be shared closer to September. For now, hold the dates — and know that everything has been planned with you in mind.
